When someone you love is going through opioid treatment, it’s natural to want to be there for them. But it can be hard to know what to say, how much to ask, or when to give space. The truth is: even with the best intentions, support can sometimes feel like pressure.
At ALT Recovery Group, we understand how delicate this balance can be. That’s why we’re here not only for those receiving care, but also for the people who love them.
Supporting someone in recovery especially through medication assisted treatment (MAT) doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means being present, listening, and creating a space where your loved one can feel safe to be honest.
Here’s what that support can look like:
Ask, don’t assume. Instead of offering advice right away, try asking “How can I best support you today?”
Use people-first language. Say “a person in recovery,” not “addict.” Language matters.
Avoid timelines. Recovery isn’t a race. Every person moves at their own pace.
Celebrate small wins. Whether it’s attending a session or texting back, little steps matter.
Take care of yourself, too. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Therapy or support groups for families help, too.
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines medication with therapy and counseling to support opioid addiction recovery. While it’s proven to be effective, it’s still widely misunderstood.
Some loved ones may ask: “Aren’t they just replacing one drug with another?” That question though common can be deeply hurtful. MAT isn’t about substitution. It’s about stabilization. It helps manage cravings, prevent relapse, and create space for healing.
At our methadone clinics in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Chatsworth, Los Angeles, we often help families better understand MAT. Because when families learn, patients thrive.
We don’t just serve individuals we support the systems around them. At ALT Recovery Group, we encourage family participation in recovery through:
Clear communication and education
Optional involvement in treatment planning
Guidance on setting healthy boundaries
Support in understanding addiction and the recovery process
